If you are like me, you have committed to eating more produce in the New Year. We know this is the best thing we can do for our bodies for optimal health, boosted immunity and complete “feel good” status. But there is a caveat to doing so: pesticides and chemicals. Traditionally grown produce is laden with harmful products that can deteriorate the state of our health. If you are buying traditionally grown produce and you want to reap all of the benefits without allowing any of the harmful pesticides and chemicals to become ingested, please follow these super simple yet effective tips:
- Soak. Soak your produce in a bath of water and apple cider vinegar. You can do this in your kitchen sink or in a large bowl. Let your produce soak for an hour or so.
- Wash and rinse. Strain your produce from the apple cider vinegar bath and then wash and rinse with cool water. If you want to, you can wash with an all- natural soap as well. If you do so, make sure you rinse thoroughly.
- Prep and store. As soon as you wash and rinse, dry your produce, prep your produce and store it. This way you will have clean and ready to go produce which means you will be more likely to eat it.
Please be smart about pesticides and chemicals. These bad boys can devastate your health and interfere with your hormones and metabolic pathways. Pesticides and chemicals decrease the uptake of vitamins and minerals in your body, so get busy cleaning up the produce you eat! When in doubt know your source. Local and organic are always the best ways to go, try farmers markets or grow in your backyard and on your patio.
